What is the best interior emulsion?

So what is the best interior emulsion! What is the best brand and why, now remember this is just my opinion brought to you from my 15 years in the trade using all these different brands.

Now I’m not saying brands like Johnstones and Leyland are bad paints and are on par with each other in terms of quality. If it is a trade paint it is normally better than a retail, they are cheaper than the big brands and they do the job, so if your trying to keep your costs down these two brands could be the brand for you.
Johnstones Covaplus vinyl matt is a good paint for the money covers really well and if your looking for something a bit more durable you could go for Johnstones durable matt which is a washable paint, great if you have kids or pets.

Crown is one of the leading brand and there is Crown’s Clean Extreme paint if you are looking for a washable paint. Crown’s heritage paints are great, they cover really well and will leave a solid finish but for me it’s creeping into the Dulux and Farrow & Ball price range and they are in my opinion the best two on the market.

Farrow & Ball make exceptional paints and you can’t fault them, they may be expensive but you pay for what you get and the wallpaper range is also second to none.

Now for my No1 emulsion without a shadow of a doubt is Dulux Diamond Matt (only in my opinion).
Dulux has greater colour range than its rivals where other brands need to mix a red and blue to make a purple to go into a mix Dulux actually has a purple colour mix so they can make so many more shades than there competitors.
The Dulux Diamond Matt coverage is amazing and it is a scrubbable paint so you don’t have to worry about a few dirty marks from the pets, kids and dirty work hands just give it a little wipe.
It is expensive but you will get a long time from it and if you aren’t to fussed for a washable paint the Dulux Vinyl Matt is a great paint and a little cheaper then cheaper again is the Dulux super matt.
Diamond matt and super matt only come in light base and medium base so colours are slightly limited that’s the only draw backs with these two paints.

The most important thing when buying any paint is buy a good trade paint and not a retail paint, the difference between the two are massive and I have blogged about this before and you don’t need to have a trade account to use a trade centre.

I know there are other brands out there and if you want to express your opinion on this blog please feel free to leave a comment.

Hi Shelly,

Yea the paint is different from retail. Dulux trade is thicker so the coverage is better. It seems hard to believe that there is two different versions of the same paint but unfortunately it is true & the trade version is the better of the two. The price is normally pretty much the same although some of it can actually cost a little more unless you have a trade account then you get a discount on the shelf price.

I've been a decorator for 35 years and the quality of paint has changed dramatically. Of particular note is the reduced longevity of exterior gloss paint. Back in the day we used lead based gloss, it was like toffee on a hot day but boy did it last. The health & safety brigade stuck their noses in and it was discontinued, could never see the problem myself as working outside surely any lead residue would have been so diluted by air as to be negligible.

Then Dulux Weathershield came along, this lasted well up to 10 years but again the EU loonies decided they had to change it’s formulation and now you’re lucky to get 5 years out of it. I often advise clients to clad gutters & fascias as no matter what I use it will need doing again in a few years.

The trade paints are definitely better but can be very expensive, expect to pay south of £40 for 10 litres Dulux trade emulsion, compared to Wickes/Homebase/B&Q who will have a product close to £10 it’s expensive but here’s the thing to consider - if you are painting something that will need more than one coat new plaster or different colour then cheaper paint with less coverage may make sense. If you are applying the same colour as was previously there then buying good paint that will definitely cover in one coat makes sense, especially for the customer who is paying for my time.

Personally I use Johnstones trade paints and Amstead emulsion available from Dulux decorator centres for around £20, coverage is good and price not too high.

One point I can’t stress enough, whatever paint you’re using stir well before use unless it’s a one coat finish paint like Dulux Once which specifically states not to. Emulsions and solvent based paints separate meaning a water or oil residue may be present if the paint has been sat for a while, a good stir will ensure the paint is of a consistency that will cover as intended.
