What is the best interior emulsion?

So what is the best interior emulsion! What is the best brand and why, now remember this is just my opinion brought to you from my 15 years in the trade using all these different brands.

Now I’m not saying brands like Johnstones and Leyland are bad paints and are on par with each other in terms of quality. If it is a trade paint it is normally better than a retail, they are cheaper than the big brands and they do the job, so if your trying to keep your costs down these two brands could be the brand for you.
Johnstones Covaplus vinyl matt is a good paint for the money covers really well and if your looking for something a bit more durable you could go for Johnstones durable matt which is a washable paint, great if you have kids or pets.

Crown is one of the leading brand and there is Crown’s Clean Extreme paint if you are looking for a washable paint. Crown’s heritage paints are great, they cover really well and will leave a solid finish but for me it’s creeping into the Dulux and Farrow & Ball price range and they are in my opinion the best two on the market.

Farrow & Ball make exceptional paints and you can’t fault them, they may be expensive but you pay for what you get and the wallpaper range is also second to none.

Now for my No1 emulsion without a shadow of a doubt is Dulux Diamond Matt (only in my opinion).
Dulux has greater colour range than its rivals where other brands need to mix a red and blue to make a purple to go into a mix Dulux actually has a purple colour mix so they can make so many more shades than there competitors.
The Dulux Diamond Matt coverage is amazing and it is a scrubbable paint so you don’t have to worry about a few dirty marks from the pets, kids and dirty work hands just give it a little wipe.
It is expensive but you will get a long time from it and if you aren’t to fussed for a washable paint the Dulux Vinyl Matt is a great paint and a little cheaper then cheaper again is the Dulux super matt.
Diamond matt and super matt only come in light base and medium base so colours are slightly limited that’s the only draw backs with these two paints.

The most important thing when buying any paint is buy a good trade paint and not a retail paint, the difference between the two are massive and I have blogged about this before and you don’t need to have a trade account to use a trade centre.

I know there are other brands out there and if you want to express your opinion on this blog please feel free to leave a comment.

What is the best wood preservative.

Now the better weather is coming some of you may be wanting to do some exterior painting, so what offers the best protection to wood.
In my opinion you cant beat Jotun Butinox.
I swear by it, and the reason I can say with such confidence that it is a great exterior wood preservative is I have used it for years and seen the results years later.
Done right you can expect 5 years plus from it.

Butinox 2 is amazing and what I would recommend  it is solid and will last you years, but if you are looking for something translucent Butinox 1 is great.
Here is a little bit about them.

Butinox 1. An exterior, translucent, solvent based woodstain designed for a variety of exterior timber applications including newly primed, previously stained or pressure impregnated wood.

Butinox 2. This opaque solvent-based woodstain delivers exceptional protection for new and existing exterior timber. It is easy to apply and forms a flexible film, which provides excellent weather resistance

Butinox 3 is an opaque waterborne wood stain for outdoor use containing both alkyd and acrylic resins offering the best performance and the longest service of all the stains in the Butinox range

I hope reading this helps keep your wood preserved for many years.

Yellowing Gloss: The Problem and The Solution

If I had a pound for every time I have been asked this I would be a rich man by now! Why does brilliant white gloss yellow within weeks, especially Dulux being the leading brand.

The Problem.

In 2010 the European Union forced all companies to reduce the amount of VOCs (Volitle Organic Compounds) in all oil-based paints.
To reduce the VOCs they had to reduce the solvents and replace it with drying oils and this is what makes it yellow.

The solution.

Don’t use gloss. Use a good trade Satinwood instead, Dulux Satinwood is by far the best in my opinion and much easier to apply than gloss.
I would also say it is a better finish than gloss but more importantly it doesn’t yellow, it is also self undercoating so it covers great and a little easier to apply for all you DIY enthusiasts out there.
There is also Dulux Diamond Satinwood that is 10 times tougher for you who wish to spend a little more money.

Hopefully this will help some people save some time and money.

Thanks for reading.
